This
is a recent interview that helps explain our mission:
INTERVIEWER: How did
the Etch Brothers come about?
OMAR: Aaron had been
doing electronica music for 10 years with keyboards and samplers.
When it's popularity came to our attention, we started throwing
around ideas to each other. I think we realized how
good we worked together. This happened at the same time that
we made a huge transition from playing instruments to producing
on computers. Everything seemed to just come together. Our group
name is the beginning of our last name (Etcheverry). I think
I thought of the name somewhere out in the middle of the ocean
on a 10-day boat trip. I think I was really just in deep thought
that day! Hah-hah!
INTERVIEWER: Given the
nature of your music, what music and artists inspired you
to embarking on this journey?
AARON: Many of our songs
mix house, soul, reggae, and trance together. It is amazing
how cool a house beat can sound mixed with a dance hall reggae
base. I grew up listening to reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, classical,
and of course, I will admit it, a little top 40. The most
inspiring music artists to me are Africa Bambata, Paul Van
Dyke, Rick Walker (our music teacher), and reggae artist is
Sly Dunbar.
INTERVIEWER: What are
your performances like?
OMAR: Our shows have good
energy and our music motivates people to dance. Many of our
supporters look for our shows because they know we mean non-stop
dance music. We use a variety of music equipment to do our
shows depending on the venue. If we do a DJ set, we put our
music on vinyl or CD and play it with effects machines and
occasionally with live singers. If we have a stage set we
spread out more, add in keyboards, samplers, computers, a
live drummer, and live singers.
